Musical Biography
Born in Sheffield England 1956, the family moved to Staffordshire in the early sixties where Paul learnt to play guitar at the age of twelve. He started playing in schoolboy bands in the 70's. His first band was Carman Smile.
Paul got married in the seventies and settled down to a proper job and family life. After a couple of years writing and playing his own material he formed a duo with George Powell playing and singing sixties and seventies covers with a good smattering of Country Rock influenced by bands such as the Eagles. Paul and George started playing the club scene and soon signed up to play major bookings across the UK. The Duo started writing their own songs and penned over 50 songs between them recording some of their best at Abbey Studios.
Paul and George split in the eighties after a fall out over a change in musical direction. Paul joined Rock Band Quantum Leap who played the Staffordshire circuit in the ninties. The members were all from the BT training collage where they all worked and consisted of Paul on rhythm, Jon Sones on lead guitar, Paul Boocock on bass, Warren “Foz” Thomas on drums and Martin Smith on lead vocals. The band stayed together for 7 years rocking all over Staffordshire. The band finally split in the late nineties due to external work and family pressures.
After a couple of years Paul decided to follow his true passion in writing and recording his own material. He teamed up with lead guitarist Jon Sones his ex band member from Quantum Leap where they wrote and recorded their Leap of Faith Album.
Jon Sones
Born in Warwickshire, England in 1964 but spent his formative years in Durham City where he first took up the guitar. Joined his first band in 1977 but was just a little too young to jump on board the punk bandwagon. Moved to Staffordshire in 1979 where he continued to play in various garage bands (literally). Jon’s first ‘proper’ band was The Play who ignited the small town of Stafford and surrounding area in 1984 playing their own material before burning out within a matter of months.
A lengthy period of almost forming bands followed before a change in the day job took Jon to BT where rock band Quantum Leap was formed with like-minded individuals including Paul Mason. A substantial part of the ‘90’s was spent gigging around Staffordshire with that band. Following the break-up of Quantum Leap, Jon went on to give his ears a rest and work on various acoustic projects, initially with Martin from QL and then with whoever would play with him. More recently Jon was the driving force behind an acoustic band which lead to the writing, performing and recording of some original songs as well as covers.
Jon was contacted by former band mate Paul Mason in 2004 to assist in the recording of a collection of his own songs which resulted in the ‘Leap of Faith’ album and an on-going collaboration. Jon is currently working with local band Fools Life as well as an as yet un-named acoustic project. Jon is an incredibly skilled and versatile guitarist playing anything from melodic acoustic numbers to scorching rock numbers. He is an incredible live player as well as a great session musician being able to play lead, bass and keyboards. If you get chance to see him live you won't be disappointed. If there are any U2 fans out there he looks and can play just like the Edge.
Paul and Jon are currently working on the next album which should be completed in the autumn of 2006
